Mask Making

The Clay Masquerade - Drawing, Clay and Design

Record and explore the different styles of Masks from around the world.

In this art workshop pupils use their sketchbooks to record eyes, mouths, face shapes, textures and patterns in order to note inspirational elements.  Developing the skills of selecting and recording, drawing as notes, diagrams and explanations, including materials and colours.  This process helped them to record something successfully.

In the classroom sketchbook drawings are developed by exploring shapes and styles they record to develop their own designs.  Leaners are encouraged to discuss the use of the masks and how the shaped and patterns might have been symbolic of the use.  Discussion used to enable pupils to reflect on meaning and develop designs that not only have decorative features but also express purpose or the symbolism of a personal or social meaning.

Techniques in building, cutting and connecting clay are demonstrated and mock-ups made.  These are then reviewed and the pupils assess the success and made positive comments on how the techniques or designs could be improved.

The final outcomes should reflect the individual style and idea of each pupil and providing them with a personal achievement.  Learning outcomes of recording, reflecting and reviewing.  Teamwork skills, Speaking and listening, peer led learning and assessment.  Independent in practical work through development of confidence in skills and exploration of materials.  Ability to identify and discuss the styles of art from other cultures and gain knowledge of purpose and use of such artefacts.
